At the 2005 World Summit, Governments committed themselves to “achieving universal reproductive health.” The Population Division is responsible for monitoring Governments’ progress towards this commitment through three indicators under the MDG 5 target to achieve, by 2015, universal access to reproductive health. The three indicators are the adolescent birth rate, contraceptive prevalence and unmet need for family planning. The Population Division compiles and assesses data from publications by ministries and national statistical offices around the world and international and national survey programmes and produces the world, regional and sub-regional estimates and metadata with detailed descriptions of the indicators.
Population estimates from World Population Prospects are also used in the calculations of other MDG indicators and to produce weighted averages of country data for world, regional and sub-regional estimates of MDG indicators. Data on these three indicators are updated annually and are available via the links below as well as on the United Nations Statistics Division MDG Database at http://www.unpopulation.org/unsd/mdg/
