HIV/AIDS

The Population Division considers the demographic and socio-economic impacts of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in both technical and policy-oriented areas of its work. The impact of AIDS on mortality is incorporated into the population estimates and projections for highly affected countries, as published in World Population Prospects. The Population Division participates in the UNAIDS Reference Group on Estimates, Modelling and Projections, contributing to the on-going improvement of methods and models.

The Division has issued a number of wall charts and reports that examine the impact of AIDS together with associated Government policy reponses and prevention measures. The latest wall chart, Population and HIV/AIDS 2010, provides information at the global, regional and country levels on several indicators, including numbers of adults and children living with HIV, AIDS deaths and AIDS orphans; on Government measures taken in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, such as blood screening, Information Education and Communication activities, provision of antiretroviral therapy (ART), antidiscrimination legislation, and distribution of condoms; and additional data on condom use, number of people receiving ART and prevention of mother-to-child transmission.
