The concepts of stable population and model life tables are of cardinal importance for demographers. Model life tables allow substituting unavailable and poor quality data on age-specific mortality with estimates that are based on regularities of age patterns of mortality observed elsewhere. Often this is the only practically available way to estimate the inputs and formulate the hypotheses for the population projections. Model life tables are also discussed and used as examples in the manuals of the cluster Demographic Estimates and Population Projections.
