Fourteenth Coordination Meeting on International Migration
25-26 February 2016
Conference Room 11, United Nations Headquarters, New York

International migration is a global phenomenon that is growing in scope, complexity and impact. Today, virtually all countries in the world are simultaneously countries of destination, origin and transit for international migrants. Traditional migration patterns are complemented by new migratory flows, fuelled by changing economic, demographic, political and social conditions. Changing migration patterns affect the size and composition of migrant populations as well as economies and societies in countries of origin and destination. The rise in global mobility, the growing complexity of migratory patterns and the impact of such movements on development have all contributed to international migration becoming a priority for the international community.

The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations is organizing the fourteenth annual Coordination Meeting on International Migration. The meeting is being held in response to General Assembly resolution 58/208 of 13 February 2004, which requests the Secretary-General to continue convening meetings to coordinate international migration activities.

The fourteenth coordination meeting on international migration has the following three objectives. First, the meeting will consider progress in monitoring and implementing migration-related commitments contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (A/RES/70/1) and the 2013 High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development (A/RES/68/4). Second, it will discuss the contribution of relevant intergovernmental bodies and forums to the follow-up and review of the migration-related goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda. Third, the meeting will allow participants to present and coordinate their activities and initiatives on migration, including those being undertaken in preparation for the high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly on addressing large movements of refugees and migrants, scheduled on 19 September 2016.

By bringing together entities of the United Nations system, other relevant intergovernmental organizations and civil society as well as interested Member States, the coordination meeting provides a unique opportunity to strengthen collaboration and coordination within the United Nations system as well as with other relevant intergovernmental organizations to fully address the issue of international migration and development.

The outcomes of the meeting will contribute to the report of the Secretary-General on international migration and development for the seventy-first session of the General Assembly.
