The indicators presented in these profiles are divided in four major parts. Part I covers the adoption of legal instruments related to international migration. Part II presents a set of population indicators including population estimates and projections, rates of change and the effects of future international migration on total population and working-age population.
The United Nations Global migration database (UNGMD) is a comprehensive collection of empirical data on the number of international migrants by country of birth and citizenship, sex and age as enumerated by population censuses, population registers, nationally representative surveys and other official statistical sources from more than 200 countries and territories in the world. The data contained in the database were derived from numerous sources, including the Demographic Yearbook, produced by United Nations Statistics Division, tabulations collected by the Population Division as well as official publications available from resource centers, libraries and the internet.
This dataset presents, for the first time, estimates of the international migrant stock by country of origin for 230 countries or areas as of mid-1990, mid-2000 and mid-2010. For each of the three dates, separate estimates are provided for the total migrant stock, the number of male migrants and the number of female migrants. The estimates are mostly based on data collected from population censuses and population registers over the past 30 years. .The results present an important new source of information to assess levels and trends of global migration, including the role of South-South migration.
